Shelby is what she wanted to be when she grew up. A journalist.
Shelby is a digital content strategist with experience in online content development, blog, video and social media, and developing platform-specific strategies for delivering content.
I'm former director of digital content and social media for SUCCESS magazine, until last month when it unexpectedly laid off its entire editorial staff and announced SUCCESS magazine was shutting down. But it's just as well.
Now I've started a new chapter freelance writing and editing, consulting and helping others tell their story. I write about personal and professional development, with special interest in productivity, life hacks, leadership, personal branding and blogging.
As a blogger, I designed and built my website FatHeadDog.com from the ground up, writing all the content and securing affiliate advertisers for the site. The deals and savings site has been featured on Blog Talk Radio with Maria Bailey, BlogHer.com and the book Power Moms. I've appeared on a local NBC affiliate as a money-saving expert.
Before my career in online news and social media, I worked her way up from cub reporter at the Plano Star Courier to managing editor of a news weekly.
At 25, I was tapped to launch a new suburban feature weekly, the Plano Insider. Shown above, the first issue rolling off the press.
In my reporting career, I've covered topics ranging from crime, courts and hard news, to self-improvement, trends and lifestyle, and won national and regional awards for excellence in reporting.
I joined SUCCESS magazine in 2009, shortly after its relaunch by Dallas-based VideoPlus (now SUCCESS Partners) as the site's web editor. In 2015, I was named the site's first director of digital content. (Upon the magazine's closure in January 2018, it's possible I was the site's last director as well.)
At SUCCESS, my team and I achieved important milestones in site traffic and social media fan bases, helping grow SUCCESS's social media from 70,000 on Facebook to a combined 6 million fans across all social platforms. In my 11 years with the company, I helped build SUCCESS.com from a few thousand visitors a month to 2.5 million uniques monthly.
In 2016, the SUCCESS team and I launched its first podcast, SUCCESS Insider as co-host. It was recognized as a New & Noteworthy in less than 24 hours of launch and reached 1 million downloads in 9 months. She was also co-host of the SUCCESS Talks podcast, which remained a staple of the iTunes Top 200 podcasts in the business category.
When SUCCESS magazine folded in January 2018, I began a new chapter working for myself, freelance writing, editing and consulting. For questions, freelance or consulting queries, contact me at email@example.com.
